Here's the scenario: You receive an email from a co-worker, with the inviting message, "Chris Agnew has invited you to edit the following document:". You click on the link in the email, only to get an error message saying you don't have permission to view the document. Has this ever happened to you? In this video tutorial and article below, we'll show you how to resolve this issue.

So first of all, let's identify the problem that we're talking about. You receive an email like this one and click on the link:

When you click on the link, you get an error message:

So, first of all, pay close attention to the email address in the error message. Is it the email address for your personal account? If that's the case, then you can see the problem: you need to be signed in with your TSS account, and you're signed in with a personal account instead.

The Immediate Fix

To resolve this issue, do not click the "Request Access" button. Teton Science Schools files should only be shared with TSS accounts, so the file's author will deny you access. Instead, click on the "switch accounts" button:

After you click on this button, you'll get another screen that gives you a chance to switch your accounts. Go ahead and log in with your email address and you should be able to view the document.

The Long-Term Fix

If you receive lots of emails like the one in this example, it can be frustrating to constantly be switching accounts and choosing this "sign in to another account" option. If you'd prefer that shared documents would just, you know, open, here's what you need to do:

1. First, you'll need log out of all your Google accounts. Do this by visiting, then click on the small circle in the upper right-hand corner and choose 'Sign Out':

2. Next, visit once again, and this time log in with your TSS account.

That's it! To prevent this problem from reoccurring in the future, be sure to log into your Teton Science Schools Google account first when you arrive at work each day. As long as you sign in with your TSS credentials first, your web browser will treat your TSS account as the default account for opening shared documents.
