Updating your computer can prevent common issues and will keep your device secure. IT recommends you take an active approach to keeping your computer up to date. This guide will outline the steps you should take to keep your Mac updated.

Updating MacOS

The first thing we're going to update is MacOS itself. Start by clicking on the Settings icon in the dock...

Then click on the General setting in the left sidebar and then choose Software Update...

From here, your computer might start checking for updates or it will tell you if you have a pending update or not...

If you have an update available, save your work in all of your open applications and then choose the Update option. MacOS will start downloading the update...

Once the update has completed downloading and processing, you will be prompted to reboot your computer...

Updating Applications

Next, we're going to update the applications on your computer. Any applications that have been installed using the App Store can be updated in bulk from within the App Store.

Start by clicking on the App Store icon in the dock...

Then choose the Updates option in the sidebar on the left side of the window...

From here, you'll be shown any apps that have pending updates. You can update all of the apps at once by clicking on the Update All button on the upper-right side of the window.
